OnlyFans Refunds and Chargebacks: What Creators Should Know
Sometimes money you thought you'd earned disappears from your OnlyFans balance. Usually that's a refund or a chargeback: a fan asked their bank or the platform to reverse a payment. Knowing how this works helps you understand your statements, reduce the causes and ask the right questions if an agency takes commission.
Editorial note: Based on the OnlyFans Terms of Service as checked on 8 October 2026 and the VANTA team's experience. OnlyFans' detailed help pages weren't publicly accessible when we checked, so some specifics are described generally. General information only.
What is a chargeback on OnlyFans?
A chargeback happens when a fan asks their bank or card provider to reverse a payment, for example because they say it was unauthorised or not as described. If the bank agrees, the money goes back to the fan. OnlyFans' terms allow it to deduct the amount from the creator's earnings.
What's the difference between a refund and a chargeback?
A refund is a reversal agreed through the platform. A chargeback is forced through the fan's bank. Both can reduce your earnings. Chargebacks are usually worse, as they're harder to contest and repeated chargebacks can raise concerns with payment processors. OnlyFans handles both; creators don't usually deal with banks directly.
| Refund | Chargeback | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | Fan through OnlyFans | Fan through their bank or card provider |
| Who decides | OnlyFans | The fan's bank, with input from the platform |
| Effect on creator | Amount can be deducted from earnings | Amount can be deducted from earnings |
| Wider risk | Usually lower | Repeated chargebacks can cause wider issues |
Do creators pay for refunds and chargebacks?
In effect, yes. OnlyFans' terms say that if a fan payment is refunded or charged back, the platform can deduct the corresponding amount from the creator's earnings, including from future earnings if it's already been paid out. Check the current terms, as details can change.
What causes refunds and chargebacks?
Common causes are content that doesn't match its description, misleading previews, being sold the same item twice, high-pressure selling, undelivered customs, fans who regret spending, and genuinely unauthorised card use, such as a family member using a card. Some are outside your control, but many come from how content is sold.
How can you reduce refunds and chargebacks?
Sell honestly. Describe content accurately, use fair previews, check purchase history before offering, deliver customs on time, and never pressure fans. Clear, consistent pricing and respectful selling make fans less likely to dispute purchases. You can't prevent every chargeback, but you can remove most of the avoidable causes.
Prevention checklist:
- Accurate descriptions and fair previews for every paid message.
- Purchase history checked before offers.
- Custom requests agreed in writing and delivered on time.
- No pressure on fans who hesitate or mention money worries.
- Regular checks of which content gets refunded, to spot patterns.
These match the money rules in our OnlyFans chatting rules.
Can you dispute a chargeback on OnlyFans?
Creators generally can't contest a chargeback with the bank directly. If you think something is wrong, contact OnlyFans support with details of the transaction. If a fan is repeatedly charging back, you can restrict or block them. Keeping clear chat records of what was agreed helps if there's a dispute.
How do refunds affect agency commission?
It depends on the contract. A fair agreement should calculate commission on earnings after refunds and chargebacks, so you don't pay commission on money you lost. Check how your statement handles reversals, especially ones that happen after commission was calculated. See agency commission explained.
At VANTA, commission is a percentage of net profit, agreed individually with each creator, and payouts go to your own account.
Where do refunds show on your OnlyFans statement?
Refunds and chargebacks should appear in your earnings and statements as deductions. Check them regularly, especially after a busy month or a big sale. A sudden rise in reversals is a warning sign worth investigating, as it often points to a selling problem rather than bad luck. See how OnlyFans payouts work.
What records should you keep in case of a dispute?
Keep chats showing what was agreed and delivered, especially for customs and high-value sales. Note the date, price and description of each paid item. If OnlyFans asks about a disputed transaction, clear records help. They also help you spot fans or content that repeatedly cause problems.
- Custom requests agreed in writing in the chat.
- Delivery confirmed in the chat.
- Notes on any fan who has requested refunds before.
- Monthly total of refunds and chargebacks.
