Do OnlyFans Creators Need to Register for VAT in the UK?

VAT is the UK tax question creators most often get wrong, partly because OnlyFans already charges VAT to fans. You may still need to register yourself once your earnings pass the threshold. This guide explains the threshold, what counts towards it, and why this is an area where professional advice is worth paying for.

Editorial note: Based on HMRC's VAT Notice 700/1 and GOV.UK guidance on VAT registration, checked on 8 October 2026. VAT for platform creators is complex and depends on your circumstances. This is general information, not tax advice. Speak to an accountant before registering or deciding not to.

Do OnlyFans creators need to register for VAT?

UK creators must register for VAT if their VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or is expected to go over it in the next 30 days alone. For most creators, turnover means their earnings from OnlyFans and other work, not what fans paid in total. Below the threshold, registration is optional.

What is the UK VAT threshold?

The registration threshold is £90,000 of VAT-taxable turnover, and it has applied since 1 April 2024. You check it on a rolling basis, looking back over the last 12 months at the end of each month, not just at the end of the tax year. Thresholds can change, so check GOV.UK.

Doesn't OnlyFans already pay VAT?

OnlyFans charges VAT to fans on their payments, as the platform is treated as the supplier to fans for VAT purposes. That doesn't automatically cover you. Your earnings from the platform are generally treated as your own turnover, so you can still pass the threshold and need to register.

What counts towards your VAT turnover?

Generally, your earnings from OnlyFans, usually the 80% after the platform's fee, plus income from other platforms, brand deals and any other VAT-taxable business income. It's based on your business as a whole, not each platform separately. How each income stream is treated can vary, so get advice if you have several.

How does OnlyFans handle VAT-registered creators?

OnlyFans has a process for creators to provide their VAT details. How VAT is then shown on your earnings depends on the platform's current set-up. Check your account's tax or banking settings and keep records of how VAT is handled. An accountant can confirm what you should charge and report.

What happens once you're registered?

You'll usually need to account for VAT on your taxable supplies, submit VAT returns, normally quarterly, using Making Tax Digital-compatible software, and keep digital records. You can usually reclaim VAT on eligible business purchases. Your accountant can advise on schemes such as the Flat Rate Scheme.

After registration:

What happens if you register late?

HMRC can backdate your registration to when you should have registered, and you may owe VAT on income from that date, plus penalties. If you think you've passed the threshold, get advice and register as soon as possible. Telling HMRC promptly usually leads to better outcomes than waiting.

Should you register voluntarily?

Some businesses register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on costs, but for many creators it may not be worth it, as it adds admin and may increase what you owe. It depends on your costs and how VAT applies to your income. This is a decision to make with an accountant.

How does VAT relate to income tax?

They're separate taxes with separate rules. Income tax is charged on your profit after allowable expenses; VAT is charged on your taxable turnover once you're registered. You may need to register for Self Assessment and pay income tax well before you reach the VAT threshold. See OnlyFans tax in the UK and UK expenses.

Would a limited company change VAT?

The VAT threshold works the same way for sole traders and limited companies. Moving to a limited company doesn't avoid VAT, and splitting one business artificially into several to stay under the threshold isn't allowed. HMRC can treat artificially separated businesses as one. See running OnlyFans through a limited company.
