OnlyFans Agency vs Freelance Chatter: Which Should You Hire?

Once your inbox outgrows you, there are two common ways to get help: hire a freelance chatter yourself, or bring in an agency that supplies a chat team. Both can work. They differ in who carries the management work, who you can hold responsible, and how much of your time the arrangement takes.

Editorial note: Written from the VANTA team's experience, including creators who came to us after hiring freelancers and creators who left agencies to go it alone. We run an agency, so weigh our view accordingly. General information only, not legal advice.

Should you hire a freelance chatter or an agency?

Hire a freelancer if you want to stay hands-on, can vet, train and check someone's work, and need limited hours. Choose an agency if you want shift coverage, oversight and reporting handled for you, and prefer one business to hold responsible. The cheaper option on paper isn't always cheaper once your own time is counted.

What does a freelance chatter cost compared with an agency?

Freelancers are commonly paid by the hour, by a percentage of the sales they make, or a mix. Agencies usually fold chatting into a percentage of your earnings. Compare the total monthly cost at a typical level of sales, then add the hours you'll spend recruiting, training and checking a freelancer's work.

There are no reliable public pay rates for either, so be wary of anyone quoting an "industry standard". Ask any freelancer or agency to show the cost at three income levels: a quiet month, a normal month and a strong month. How agency percentages are calculated is covered in our commission guide.

What are the risks of hiring a freelance chatter yourself?

The main risks are poor or misleading messaging, unreliable hours, access you can't easily control, mishandled fan data, and no cover when they stop. Because OnlyFans holds you responsible for everything on your account, a freelancer's mistake is your mistake. Clear written rules and regular checks reduce the risk.

What are the risks of using an agency?

The main risks are losing control of your account or payouts, unclear commission terms, lock-in through long contracts, and a team that pushes sales harder than you're comfortable with. These are contract and vetting problems. A good agency agrees boundaries with you, reports clearly and lets you leave on reasonable notice.

Who is responsible for fans' personal data?

You are, in most cases. Fans' messages, names and spending history are personal data, and the creator usually decides how it's used. If you're in the UK or EU and share inbox access with a freelancer or agency, data protection law expects a written agreement on how they handle it. Anyone outside your account shouldn't keep copies.

This matters more than it used to. Allegations that agency staff shared fans' personal information feature in the US chatter lawsuit, and data mishandling can harm fans and your reputation.

When does a freelancer make more sense?

A freelancer suits creators who enjoy running their own business, have a modest inbox, mainly need cover for a few hours a day, and want to keep the voice close to their own. It also suits creators who already have good systems: a vault, price ladder, rules and notes that someone else can follow.

When does an agency make more sense?

An agency suits creators whose inbox needs cover across many hours, who don't want to recruit or supervise staff, or who also want help with content planning, pricing and traffic. It also suits creators who'd rather hold one business accountable than manage several freelancers. Check the contract as carefully as you'd vet a person.

At VANTA, the Chat Performance package covers messaging for creators who run their own marketing. Creators keep their own login and full access, and our team works on the account only with the creator's permission, through our management system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a freelance chatter and an agency at the same time?

It's possible but usually messy. Two teams in one inbox makes it hard to keep a consistent voice, track who sold what and hold anyone responsible. If you do it, split responsibilities clearly, for example by time of day.

Where do creators find freelance chatters?

Creators find freelancers through referrals, freelancing platforms and creator communities. Whatever the source, check references, test with a short trial and keep control of access.

Do agencies use freelance chatters?

Some do. Ask any agency who will actually be messaging your fans, whether they're employees or contractors, how they're trained and how their conversations are checked.

Is an agency chat team better than a freelancer?

Not automatically. An agency should offer coverage, oversight and accountability; a good freelancer may offer a closer personal fit. Judge each on evidence, written terms and how they handle your boundaries.
